Great content can’t rank if search engines struggle to crawl, render or understand your site. Technical SEO is the foundation everything else sits on — and it’s often where the fastest wins are hiding. Use this checklist to audit your site and prioritise fixes by impact.
1. Crawlability and indexing
- Check robots.txt isn’t blocking important folders, CSS or JavaScript.
- Submit a clean XML sitemap containing only indexable, canonical 200-status URLs.
- Review the Pages report in Google Search Console for ‘Crawled – currently not indexed’ and ‘Duplicate without user-selected canonical’.
- Make sure every important page is reachable within three clicks from the homepage.
- Fix orphan pages by adding contextual internal links.
2. Site architecture and URLs
- Use short, descriptive, lowercase URLs with hyphens.
- Group related pages into logical hubs (for example /services/seo/ under /services/).
- Add breadcrumbs so users and crawlers understand hierarchy.
- Redirect old or duplicate URLs with a single 301 — avoid redirect chains.
3. Speed and Core Web Vitals
Page experience signals reward sites that load fast and feel stable. Focus on the three Core Web Vitals: LCP (loading), INP (responsiveness) and CLS (visual stability).
- Compress and serve images in modern formats (WebP/AVIF) with explicit width and height.
- Lazy-load below-the-fold images and embeds.
- Minimise render-blocking CSS and defer non-critical JavaScript.
- Use a CDN and server-level caching.
- Reduce third-party scripts — every tag has a cost.
4. On-page technical signals
- Unique, descriptive title tags and meta descriptions for every indexable page.
- One clear H1 per page and a logical heading structure.
- Self-referencing canonical tags on every page.
- Descriptive alt text on meaningful images.
5. Structured data
Schema markup helps search engines and AI assistants understand your content. Start with Organization, LocalBusiness (if relevant), Service, FAQPage, Article and BreadcrumbList. Validate everything with Google’s Rich Results Test.
6. Mobile, security and international
- Test key templates on real mobile devices — Google indexes the mobile version.
- Serve the whole site over HTTPS and fix mixed-content warnings.
- If you target multiple countries or languages, implement hreflang correctly.
How to prioritise
Not every issue matters equally. Fix anything that blocks indexing first, then speed issues on your highest-traffic templates, then structured data and internal linking. Re-crawl after each batch of changes and track impressions and clicks in Search Console.
